Bid farewell to lip glosses. When it comes to lips, mattes are now the new favorite. The matte lip look is a look that everyone is loving; from celebrity trendsetters like Kylie Jenner, to the most ordinary girl-next-door. Make a trip to beauty stores to see for yourself how many people are hopping onto this trend. Today we discuss the 10 Must-Haves Matte Lipsticks that every beauty lover should own.
1. Kylie Lip Kit
When Kylie Jenner first released her lipkits on her website, it sold out in minutes. Everytime she announced a restock, up to 300,000 people camped on her website, hoping to be able to snatch up a lipkit. Resellers put their lipkits up on eBay for almost 10 times the original price.
The vegan-friendly lipkit comes equipped with a pencil liner and a liquid lipstick, which I personally think is pretty smart considering the fact that it saves you the trouble of having to find a lip liner of the same shade and having to purchase it separately. There are currently 20 shades available, including the original mattes and also the metal mattes.
When it comes to lipsticks, we all want to find one that will last us forever (or at least until we get home) and be able to chow through that sandwich without worrying about reapplication. The staying power of her lipsticks have been known to be able to last through an entire day, but this may also be the reason for the downside. While the lipsticks have been known to have a great staying power, some complained that it was very drying on their lips. I’ve personally tried her lipkits and I’ve got to say that I’m pretty impressed with the high pigmentation and long staying power. Unlike some, I don’t feel like there’s “a layer of concrete on my lips”. For matte lipsticks, drying is a common thing, but I’d say that her lipsticks weren’t as drying as I thought it would be.
Retailing at US$29 (S$40) for the kit, Kylie’s lipkit sits on the pricier side, but after all it iss Kylie Jenner we’re talking about here. So if you’re true beauty fanatic, go get it girl! Available here.
2. Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick
One of Kylie Jenner’s biggest competitor, Jeffree Star’s liquid lipsticks have been known to be better than hers and more affordable. Jeffree Star’s Velour Liquid Lipstick provides a wider and bolder range of colours, such as “Drug Lord”, a matte white liquid lipstick that doubles as an eyeliner. More variety of colours can be found from Jeffree’s collection, with bolder ones in shades of turqoise and purple. Or softer, more neutral colors are plenty as well.
Just like Kylie’s lipkits, Jeffree’s lipsticks are always hot on demand as well. His products are currently all sold out on the website and you can only wait patiently on the site to purchase it when he announces the restock time, a similar situation to Kylie’s. His lipsticks are priced more reasonably at US$18 (S$24) per tube.
Many have commented that Jeffree Star’s liquid lipsticks are better because they are not as drying as Kylie’s and are as pigmented and lasting. I guess you will have to try it yourself to find out! His lipsticks are available here.
3. Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream
One of the cheapest alternative on our list, the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream stands at only S$13 per tube. Unlike the first two on the list, NYX’s formula is a creamy consistent, which means it is not as drying as liquid ones that dries out to a full-on matte.
The NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream has been around for a long time and it’s always been a hot favourite due to it’s affordable pricing. It comes in 34 different shades that are suitable for all occasions. The lipstick goes on creamy just like its name, and dries out to become more matte.
Judging from the price and raved reviews of it, it’s definitely worth a buy. The NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream is available here.
4. Silkygirl Matte Junkie Lip Cream
Priced at only S$11.90, the Silkygirl Matte Junkie Lip Cream shows that some things are worth more than its price. Launched sometime in May this year, it has since been getting good reviews and is often out of stock in stores.
The consistency is similar to the NYX soft matte lip cream, though not as pigmented. (It takes two or more coats for the color to be fully opaque on my lips.) The staying power is surprisingly good for a drugstore product, which is probably why it is all the rage. It is also not as drying compared to other matte lipsticks, probably due to its creamy consistency.
For the price, it is definitely a product worth buying and is one of the best drugstore matte lipsticks around. Try it for yourself to find out! Available here.
5. Too Faced Melted Matte Lipstick
Too Faced is known for their melted lipsticks and I still remember all the rage over their melted lipstick when it was first launched. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that the rage has already begun even before they released their melted matte lipsticks. Catching on t0 the trend, Too Faced released their melted matte lipstick and it was sold out within the day in some stores.
The reviews on this were all quite positive, with many stating that it was indeed long lasting and does dry out to a full matte, though some people did say that it does transfer a little. The consistency of this product is also more towards the creamier side rather than a liquid formula so that might be a reason. The color range for this lipstick comes in 18 shades. The shades are pretty well-balanced, with a fair bit of pinks and neutrals as well as dark blue and reds.
Priced at S$33, it is pretty pricey and is only slightly below Kylie’s lipkit, but it does not come with any pencil liner. Considering the quality of it, $33 is a pretty okay price. You can get it here.
6. Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip
Beauty lovers will surely be familiar with the name Colourpop. Colourpop is an online cosmetic store and their liquid lipsticks are so popular that people are buying them in bulks. Priced at only US$6 (S$8), the product is far cheaper than many other liquid lipsticks you find in stores.
So what’s so great about these lipsticks that makes them so highly raved? High pigmentation, long-lasting wear, easy application – these factors may be just what most people look out for when they purchase liquid lipsticks and are also the reason why Colourpop is so well-received.
Colourpop’s formula is watery, yet pigmented, thus making it easy to glide on and giving users the much needed coverage. Just one coat is enough and that shows how pigmented it is. As do other liquid matte lipsticks, it is pretty drying, but that also mean that it does not budge and sets to a full matte. I own a few of these myself and I’d say that they’re really good if you’re one who likes the full-on matte lip, otherwise you’ll probably find that it’s too much for you. It lasted me through an entire day of eating and there were only minimal wearing off around the corners of my lip, but nothing too much.
It does surpass some other higher-end matte lipsticks and that could very well be the reason why they are so popular. When it comes to makeup, everyone is looking for a cheap yet good alternative and Colourpop has it. They have a wide range of shades for you to choose from and for the price, you can definitely get a few of these for the price of one from other brands. Try it now and you’ll know why people are buying it in bulk.
7. NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil
We embrace all forms of matte lipsticks; whether they are liquids, creams, or even pencils. The NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils were my first touch on matte lipsticks. They go so easily on the lips and sets at a matte that isn’t too much for even a non-matte lip lover. The velvet finish also feels very mosturizing on the lips.
As this product comes in a form of a jumbo lip crayon, it is super travel-friendly and easy to carry around, with the only downside being that it needs to be sharpened from time to time. The pigmentation is surprisingly good for a pencil and its lasting power is pretty good, though touch-ups are needed. If you have dry lips and don’t wish to steer towards full-on matte products, then this lip pencil is made for you. The product is very buttery and once on your lips, it is a product that does not reflect any light, and has that matte effect going on. It does not dry up your lip very much and feels smooth and velvety.
The colour options of the line is great, with a total of 20 shades (or more). The shades have very nice colours that apply really nicely and there are quite a few shades that are suitable for all skin tones. The quality of this lip pencil is extremely good and definitely worth your S$38. Available here.
8. Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick
Known for its long-wearing formula just like its name states, the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick has been known by some as the lipstick that gets you through the entire day without needing any touch-ups. Much has been raved about the shade “Beso”, described as a “true red” on their website. “Beso” is a bold statement lip colour that will draw stares.
It has been reviewed that this Stila lipstick will last the entire day of eating, talking, and drinking without budging a single bit. That may probably be the biggest reason behind the cons of this lipstick. While said to be able to last the entire day, many have reviewed saying this lipstick is very drying and feels very “cakey” on their lips.
As mentioned, all liquid matte lipsticks tend to be drying due to their formula and the higher the staying power, the higher chance for it to be dehydrating. Drying or not, if you’re one who’s up for the long-lasting, highly pigmented lipstick, this is your go-to. Priced at S$33, it may be the reason why some people are being more picky on the cons of this product, because after all it’s quite a bit of money. I’d say it’s up to your preference, but this is one lipstick that shouldn’t be overlooked due to how good it’ll look on you. Available here.
9. Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick
When Sephora Singapore announced the launch of Kat Von D’s cosmetic line in conjunction with the opening of their new store, hundreds of people queued overnight to get a chance to meet and greet the star herself. Her new liquid lipsticks have also taken the beauty world by storm with shades like “Double Dare” being sold out online even before the launch. (I went down on the actual day a few hours after and it was all sold out in stores as well.)
People sung high praises for her Everlasting Liquid Lipstick. Just look at the packaging! This lipstick comes in a slim tube which makes it easy to carry around and the design on the tube is just so attractive. The formula is somewhere in between watery and creamy, and glides onto the lips very smoothly. It dries out to a matte finish and does not transfer.
The formula does not dry out your lip and lips feel soft after application. The staying power is not as long compared to the other products as it does wear off quite easily, especially if you’re going through a heavy meal. The shades are beautiful though, with “Lolita” and “Lolita 2” being the most popular shades. I own “Lolita 2” myself and I’ve got to say it’s a really pretty shade that suits every skin tone.
For S$31, it’s a product that is really worth the price. Go get yours now!
10. M.A.C Retro Matte Lipstick
Any makeup lover would definitely own one of M.A.C’s lipsticks. The signature black tube has been around for quite awhile now and M.A.C can be known as one of the pioneers in the makeup industry. M.A.C offers their matte lipstick at S$31 per tube.
The reason why M.A.C lipsticks are so famous is because of their huge range of colours available. M.A.C offers studio-quality makeup at an affordable price and readily available to everyone. One of the most popular shades would be “Ruby Woo”, a gorgeous cherry red shade which has been crowned as the “Best Selling Lipstick”.
Reviews for M.A.C’s lipsticks are positive, with many saying that the lipsticks are matte but not drying, and does not leave a heavy feeling on the lips. With all these positive reviews, it’s no wonder that M.A.C’s lipsticks are so highly raved about. It is a true classic that every makeup lover must own. Get yours in stores now to try it!
So with that we conclude the list of the 10 Must-Have Matte Lipsticks. Seems like the matte lip trend won’t be dying out anytime soon, so hurry and hop over to grab one of them to perfect that pout!
