#2: 11 August to 9 September – Hungry Ghost Festival

Hungry Ghosts festivalCredits: Astrologylife.net

No, I’m not asking you to bring someone on a first date here… but if you happen to pass by any tents celebrating this festival, consider popping by for a bit! The Hungry Ghost Festival is one of the best times of the year to soak in the local culture and observe traditional rites in hyper-modern Singapore.

Raucous dinners, auctions, Chinese operas and getai are just a few of the activities set up at these large tents!

A mainstay of the festival is the getai performance, thrown as a popular mode of entertainment for the wandering spirits. But ‘getai‘ today is a very different animal—jazzed up with snazzy LED panel lit stages. Young, attractive performers sing not just traditional songs in dialect but thumping techno versions of English and Mandarin pop ditties. It appears that even the tastes of the spiritual world are moving with the times.

Everyone is welcome—so sit back, relax and enjoy the show. Just remember not to sit in the front row, unless you want to rub shoulders with the ‘special guests’!

When: 11 August to 9 September 2018

Time: Night

Venue: Various places across Singapore (Especially heartland estates like Ang Mo Kio & Yishun)
