As we get older, we start to reminisce about the things we wish we knew when we were younger. The years of being a 20-something are an important stage in life. You start to become more independent and figure out who you really are. If you could go back what would you tell your younger self? Or based on your experiences, what advice would you tell someone in their early twenties?
#1: Caring For Your Body
Being in your twenties, you may think that you’re still invincible. However, this is the period of time when you start to realise that you need to make more of an effort when taking care of yourself. This could be things like getting into a routine of eating healthier at every meal, taking a walk every morning before you start your day or drinking more water. Whatever it is, it’s important to start some self-care now!
Whether you’re sexually active or not, look into taking contraceptives. While there are pros and cons for taking oral contraceptives, the biggest take away is that it can reduce the risks of developing ovarian and endometrial cancer. It’s always a good idea to be proactive and if you aren’t sure if it’s the right thing for you and your body, don’t hesitate to set up an appointment with your doctor.
It’s imperative to start getting into a habit of a healthy lifestyle since a tender age. Even if you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy working out, it’s important to get your body moving a few days a week. Your body will thank you for this when you’re older. While it might seem like the last thing you want to, be sure to exercise while it’s your time of the month. If you belong to a gym, check out if they have offer any free group workout classes. It’s much easier to exercise with others, and they can hold you accountable too!
#2: Financial Responsibilities
During your twenties, it can be easy to get carried away with your money. Meeting friends for after work dinner and drinks, paying for living costs and other miscellaneous items can start to add up. It’s important to figure out the best way to manage your own money. Whether it’s through a financial planner or a budgeting app, you can learn how to manage your money and track your expenses.
Impulse buying is pretty common for a lot of people within their twenties (tell me about it, right?). But if you’re going to spend money on clothes and accessories, it’s better to spend the extra money on something that will last you a very long time. Think about how often you have to wear a bra and how expensive they can be for something you wear every day. You’re going to want to find a quality and comfortable bra company that offers you products that meet your everyday needs. Spending a little extra money on those everyday essentials will be beneficial to your checking and savings account in the future.
#3: Learning Something New
During the stage in your life, you could be finishing your education or deciding to continue it. Wherever you find yourself during this period of time in your life, it’s important to make a conscious effort to continue to learn. This could be reading on a specific interest or learning a new skill.
Learning to cook is a very important skill to learn during your twenties. Say goodbye to the days of instant noodle packets and frozen dinners. Whether you’re living on your own, with roommates or still living with your parents, pick a night out of the week to learn to cook something new. Look into sites such as Pinterest, that share a variety of “cooking for one” recipes. Or if you’re cooking a large amount of food, look for meals that take under twenty minutes to prepare.
Fast forward and think about important life skills that you might need to know later in life. Such as learning how to change a car tyre, knowing how to perform first aid or simple dinner etiquette skills. Those are only a few essential skills that will be carried throughout your lifetime.
Step outside of your comfort zone when learning something new, you never know when it will come in handy!
How about you? What would you have told your younger self if you could?
