If you think that makeup is all about thick layers of foundation, heavy eyeliners and bold lipstick colours, then you’re wrong. Less is more. The no makeup-makeup look is probably one of the best makeup trends that has been going around and we’re guessing it’s here to stay. Celebrities love it and it has been spotted on the red carpet numerous times. Here’s our guide on how to get the natural makeup look!
Step 1: Prep Your Skin
It is very important to make sure that your skin is well moisturised before putting on any makeup. Moisturising your skin before makeup ensures that your skin is well prepped for whatever heavy foundation or creams and will also make sure it doesn’t get too oily. After all, the reason why your skin is oily is due to the lack of moisture, thus making it produce more oil to protect your skin.
We recommend: Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Water Gel, $25.90
Step 2: Keep a light hand on the base
You want to keep it natural, so be sure to go easy on your foundation. If your skin doesn’t require that much coverage, then BB cream or just some concealer for your blemishes/undereye would be enough.
If you must have foundation, start with a pea sized amount. Less is more, so start small. (that rhymes!) Start from the middle of your face and blend outwards towards your hairline and jaw. Tip: For a dewy, natural finish, mix your foundation with a little facial oil or rose water.
We recommend: Garnier SkinActive Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream, $16
Step 3: Fill in your brows
For those who are blessed with eyebrows like Cara Delevingne’s, good for you. However, that’s not the case for most of us. We recommend filling in your eyebrows with an eyebrow crayon or eyebrow powder for a more natural finish. Start with gentle, short strokes and follow in the direction of your natural hair. Remember to blend out with a spoolie brush to avoid harsh lines!
We recommend: Etude House Drawing Eyebrow Pencil, $5.90
Step 4: Curl those lashes!
Give your natural lashes a little definition by curling them and applying a thin coat of mascara. Be careful not to overdo the mascara or else it will mess up the natural makeup look! You can use brown or dark brown mascara to make it extra natural. You can also choose to line your waterline with a brown eyeliner or skip it altogether.
We recommend: Innisfree Skinny Microcara, $14.52
Step 5: Eyeshadow
When going for a natural look, choose more neutral shadow colours like cream, beige or light brown, depending on your skin tone. We suggest using eyeshadow crayons or creams to create a subtle dewy finish around the lids.
We recommend: Clinique Chubby Stick Shadow Tint, $28
Step 6: The natural flush
Of course, the key to a natural makeup look is the blush! Putting on blush will make you look healthier and naturally flushed, but the shade of the blush is very important in order to not look too fake. Some might be too pink or too red, so you have to find the perfect one for your skintone.
We recommend cult favourite: The NARS Orgasm blush, $50
Step 7: Pucker up!
When it comes to lipstick, it will either make or break your whole look. For a natural makeup, we’re looking at MLBB (my lips but better) shades. Think dusty-rose or coral shades. Lipstick shade is important because a too pale shade will make you look sick while a bold red will not help to achieve the no makeup-makeup effect. Try to find a lipstick that matches the colour of your natural lip, or a tinted lip balm.
We recommend: NARS Dolce Vita Sheer Lipstick, $40
So there we have it! 7 steps to the perfect no makeup-makeup look. It will help to add a healthy glow to your face without looking too overwhelmed with makeup. Perfect for an everyday look and easy to do as well. Try it out and let us know what you think!
