It’s 2017 and if you and your friends are looking out for new dining options in town, we have some suggestions. What’s better than spending quality time bonding over good food right? We’ve hunted down some of the latest cafes that you can spend time at with your friends this new year!

1. Gudetama Cafe

Gudetama is a lazy egg character from Japan that became popular because of its lazy and nonchalant attitude. We must agree that it is indeed very cute. Since 30 November 2016, the Gudetama Cafe has officially opened in Singapore! Yay! The Gudetama cafe is located Suntec City and the cafe seats 112 people. The cafe is started by homegrown F&B brands Joe & Dough.

As with all themed cafes, expect the menu to be on the pricey side. Main courses range from $18 to a whooping $38. Side dishes start from $12.50, which is pretty pricey if you ask me. However, people who are interested in themed cafes usually don’t nit-pick on the quality of the food too much as the atmosphere and environment is what matters more.

Find them at: #01-61 Suntec City Mall, 3, 3 Temasek Blvd, Singapore 038983

Opening hours: 9am – 10pm Daily

2. Pokemon Cafe

Remember the pop-up Pokemon cafe located at Bugis Junction earlier this year that had people queueing 5 hours? Good news for Pokemon fans: it’s back! This time round, the cafe is themed according to the new Pokemon Sun & Moon. It opened on November 24 and will run till Feb 19, 2017. The cafe is a collaboration with popular chain Everything with Fries (EWF).

Though the hype of Pokemon Go might have subsided, the popular anime that grew up with us will never be forgotten. We think that it’s a great place to catch up with your friends if you don’t mind the long queues and hefty price tags. Be prepared to spend at least $50 each if you’re looking for a two-course meal with drinks.

Find them at: Bugis Junction, #04-05, 200 Victoria Street, 188021

Opening hours: 11am – 10pm daily

3. Shiberty Bakes

Blogger Jessica Loh (@shiberty) opened her first cafe in Owen Road sometime in April this year. At a tender age of 23, Jessica has been baking and selling her desserts through Instagram for the past 4 years and her dream finally came true when she opened her first physical store. Since the opening, my Instagram feed has been flooded with dessert porn consisting of her famous Shibuya toasts ($16+), macarons ($2 each), and OTT (over-the-top) milkshakes ($9).

Got a sweet tooth? Searching for a dessert place? Make sure to drop by! Judging by how Insta-worthy the desserts are, we’re sure you won’t be disappointed.

Find them at: #01-277, 46 Owen Rd, Singapore 210046

Opening hours: 1pm – 10pm daily, closed on Monday

4. Hello Kitty Orchid Garden

The most recognised cat worldwide – Hello Kitty. This timeless classic cartoon character has finally made its permanent appearance in Singapore! The Hello Kitty cafe landed on our shores sometime in May this year, with a theme of “Orchid Garden”, inspired by our national flower. It is located at Terminal 3 of Changi Airport, which might be an inconvenient location but that doesn’t stop Hello Kitty fans from travelling all the way down. The queue was as long as 4 hours on the first day of opening. I also had friends who suggested going down during the wee hours at 3-5am in the morning and there would still be a short queue! Wow. (P.S. the cafe is open 24hrs!)

Mains are priced from $17.50 to $24. Pretty pricey, but not too bad compared to others. By this time, the hype over it should’ve subsided but you’d never know. Also, friends who have been there told me not to expect much of the food, but just focus on soaking in the Hello Kitty atmosphere.

Find them at: 65 Airport Boulevard, Singapore Changi Airport, Terminal 3 Arrival Meeting Hall Central, #01-22, Changi Airport Singapore (SIN), 819663

Opening hours: 24 hours daily

5. Pompompurin Cafe

Is 2016 the year of themed cafes? We certainly think so, judging by the number of themed cafes that have sprung up here in Singapore. In case you didn’t know, Pompompurin is a character from Sanrio (as is Hello Kitty and Gudetama). Pompompurin is a golden retriever whose trademark is a brown beret on its head. You might not have heard of Pompompurin before, as it is not as popular as Hello Kitty and Gudetama. However, the opening of the cafe did attract a significant amount of visitors.

The pricing at Pompompurin Cafe is significantly higher than other themed cafes here in Singapore. Simple mains like spaghetti napolitana sells at $26.99, and a simple pudding $9.99. To be fair, diners get to bring home a Pompompurin mug for every order. I guess that will justify the steep pricing for such simple dishes.

Find them at: 181 Orchard Road, #04-08, Orchard Central, Orchard Central, 238896

Opening hours: 11am – 10.30pm daily

6. Chong Wen Ge Cafe

When I first read about this cafe, I felt extremely compelled to pay a visit – simply because it’s not just like any other cafe that sells the same things. It has a Singaporean edge to it, and also because the interior design of this cafe is SO pretty.

Chong Wen Ge cafe is a cafe specializing in Peranakan food (especially their pretty kuehs), smacked in the middle of CBD. They serve local delights such as laksa ($8.80), mee siam ($6.80), Nyonya Otah Sandwich ($4.80) and many others at an affordable price. Their kuehs are all handmade and go for $10 for 5 kuehs and a cup of coffee/tea, which is a very good deal considering the location.

It’s a really lovely place with intricate Peranakan interior designs, right down to the floor tiles! Do pay a visit to this special cafe if you have the chance.

Find them at: 168 Telok Ayer Street Singapore 068619 (next to Thian Hock Keng Temple)

Opening hours: 10am – 7pm daily

Isn’t the decor at Platform 1094 really pretty? Harry Potter fans will be really excited to visit this Hogwarts-lookalike cafe and indulge in food for wizards. The prices there are standard cafe prices, and a tad cheaper than most of the other themed cafes on this list.
